NWAS China Lake - CERCLA Investigations
Sullivan is currently the prime contractor for conducting multiple tasks as part of the CERCLA response at Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Sites 12, 23 and 70 at NWAS China Lake. The scope of work includes the preparation of sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and work plans for landfill maintenance activities, groundwater monitoring, remedial investigation reporting, time-critical removal actions, and an SVE system pilot study.

The work at the inactive IRP Site 12 landfill includes the development of a remedy option and maintenance plan, upgrade of landfill signage, periodic site inspection of cover material integrity, and annual re-grading and re-compacting of existing cover materials. The work also includes groundwater sampling and analysis of three existing point-of-compliance (POC) monitoring wells and the installation of an additional POC well, also to be sampled.

Remedial investigation activities at NWAS China Lake include soil sampling at a former PCB storage pit and groundwater and soil sampling at IRP Sites 23 and 70 to provide data in support of associated remedial actions. Planned remedial actions include the excavation and disposal of pesticide contaminated soils at IRP Site 23 and PCB contaminated soils at the former PCB storage pit. In addition, the design, installation, operation and evaluation of the SVE pilot study at IRP Site 70 is planned for the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

The results of the SVE pilot study are to be incorporated into a remedial investigation (RI) report for the entire Michelson Laboratory/Public Works operable unit of NWAS China Lake. The preparation of a Feasibility Study, Proposed Plan and Record of Decision for the Michelson Laboratory/Public Works operable unit will follow regulatory acceptance of the results of the RI report.

The project team includes geologists, hydrogeologists, GIS specialists, engineers, environmental scientists, equipment operators a document manager and subcontractors.
